10 wind turbines on coastal defense
Building wind turbines on a hard seawall? That’s a challenge that requires precise planning, an integrated design, and a customized approach.

Integrated design for the foundation of 10 wind turbines on a dike

Commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat, Eneco is building Windpark Maasvlakte 2 with 22 wind turbines. Ten of these turbines will be installed on the dike that protects the hinterland from the sea. Due to the risks associated with working on a dike, we only carry out our seawall work outside the storm season. Therefore, the entire project must be completed between April 1 and October 1. This requires precise and complex planning for all parties involved.

Sustainable integrated design
The construction of the turbines must not compromise the stability of the seawall. Therefore, we take into account the pressure from the turbine and the forces generated when the blades are in motion. Joosten Concepts partner Geologics is responsible for the integrated 3D design of the foundation, which we are constructing against and partially within the dike on behalf of Ballast Nedam.
Integrated design is an approach where we combine all separate components of a project. Our goal: cost efficiency and time savings by striving for the most optimal solution at the lowest possible lifecycle cost.
Reinforced earth structure with custom formwork
As the foundation, partner Bonneveld is building 10 reinforced earth structures. With a reinforced earth structure, we construct a retaining wall in a short time. This method involves building a braced system formwork at the front side of the wall to be constructed. For this challenging design—with two 45° corners and an 85° slope—we use custom formwork.
Blending into the Environment
In the first phase, we build up to the underside of the mast foundation. After installing the bored piles and concrete foundations, we complete the structures. The visible sides are finished during the placement of soil layers with UV-resistant TenCate Robulon in green. This allows the structures to blend seamlessly into the surroundings.
