Circular green roof for energy-efficient pavilion
In 2017, an energy-efficient pavilion was developed in Amsterdam’s Zuidas district. Joosten Ecodak was brought in by Donker Groep to contribute to the design process, supply materials, and provide guidance during the development and installation of the green roofs.
The building was named the most sustainable international office building in 2016.
Starting Point: Circular Economy
The concept of the Circular Economy was the guiding principle in the development of the energy-efficient pavilion. This meant that finite raw materials could not be used, and all residual materials had to be fully reused. Our challenge was to develop a truly circular solution.

Sustainable Materials
All selected products are proven to have a long lifespan.
Modular Construction
The eco-roofs are designed so that individual materials can be separated during disassembly, allowing them to be recycled or reused independently.
Material Passport
After a brainstorming session with part of the project team, the material passport was developed. The material passport provides insight into the origin of a product, how it was transported, and its destination at the end of its life cycle.
Building Passport
The circularity of the ABN AMRO building is documented in a building passport. Using a new digital tool, the pavilion at the Zuidas has been fully mapped in 3D. This development brings the construction sector one step closer to the ambition of a Circular Netherlands by 2050.
